Testimonial

Our old church website was outdated and didn’t represent who we are very well at Shoal Creek. But I don’t have a background in web design and hosting, so I wasn’t sure how it would go hiring out a website redesign project… and I couldn’t do it myself.

What sold me on hiring VMX Media is that Brett was able to answer my questions about how the overall process would go and that he had the expertise to do quality work. Plus his heart for the gospel!

Toward the end of the project, we had to adjust the timeline to move everything up in time for our new October series. Brett was very communicative and responsive throughout the process and he was able to get everything completed ahead of schedule!

Our new website is a dramatic upgrade from our old website! Not only did Brett nail the design / look that we wanted, he was even even able to work with our website host to make sure our site performance was as good as possible.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What host should I use?

Answer: You get what you pay for with hosting. Stay away from cheap, shared hosting plans! They’re cheap for a reason. They’re typically very slow and have terrible customer service.

At VMX Media, we offer Premium Managed WordPress Hosting.

How do I secure my site?

Answer: You can either research the many free and paid security plugins that are out there or you can go with a host protects your site for you.

At VMX Media, we handle security at the server level, so you don’t have to worry about adding any additional security plugins. And if your website gets hacked and malware is installed, we will fix it for free!

Are premium themes worth it?

Answer: Yes! Free themes are typically slow and are very limited in their flexibility and functionality. Premium (paid) themes are absolutely worth over the lifetime of a website.

Should I use a page builder?

Answer: You don’t have to, but we like them. WordPress’ out-of-the-box editor (Gutenberg) is good for creating basic webpages, but if you want to add some creativity, you’ll need to know how to code.

Page builders allow you to make beauitful websites without needing to know how to write code.

What plugins should I use?

Answer: As few as possible and the recommendations are constantly changing. Below are the plugins we recommend.

Image optimization: ShortPixel

Site Performance: WP Rocket

Writing for SEO: Yoast

What do I actually need?

Answer: This varies case by case and we are happy to make recommendations to our clients based on their goals for their website.

What is DNS? SSL? CDN?

Answer: These are important acronyms for websites:

DNS – Domain Name System. It’s like the phone book for the internet. Just like phone numbers point a phone call to a person’s phone, DNS points a domain name (like apple.com) to a website.

SSL – Secure Socket Layer. It’s part of what helps secure your website and is the “s” in https://

CDN – Content Delivery Network. A CDN creates a “copy” of a website on multiple servers around the world so that a website can be accessed quicker from any country in the world.

How do I create a multilingual website?

Answer: Creating a multilingual website is complex. We use the the WPML plugin (WordPress MultiLingual) to make it happen. WPML is relatively easy to maintain, but it is difficult to set up. Most people will need assistance setting up WPML.

Hey! I’m Brett.

Thank you for your interest in VMX Media!

I first started developing websites in 2013 when I helped my wife, Faith, launch The Conscientious Eater. Since then, I’ve been dreaming about how to help others multiply their digital impact.

Faith and I became digital nomads in 2015 when we moved to “middle of nowhere” China. After a brief stint in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we have been based out of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where we hope to settle down with our two kids.
